# Actual cash value (ACV)

> What actual cash value (ACV) means on an insurance claim, how depreciation is subtracted from replacement cost, and when ACV vs replacement cost applies.

**Actual cash value (ACV)** is what your property is worth today: replacement cost minus depreciation. A 10-year-old roof has ACV much lower than a new one.

ACV policies or settlements are often cheaper upfront but can pay less at claim time than replacement cost coverage. Understand which valuation method your policy uses for dwelling and contents.
