# Additional living expenses

> What additional living expenses (ALE) coverage on a homeowners policy pays for, including hotel, meals, and other extra costs after a covered loss.

**Additional living expenses (ALE)** pays hotel, meals, and other temporary costs if a covered loss makes your home uninhabitable. It is standard on most homeowners policies.

Check your limit — it is often a percentage of dwelling coverage. Keep receipts; insurers typically reimburse reasonable extra costs above your normal living expenses.
