# Bodily injury liability

> What bodily injury liability (BI) coverage on an auto policy pays for, how per-person and per-accident limits work, and why state minimums fall short.

**Bodily injury liability (BI)** pays for other people's medical bills and lost wages when you cause an accident. Limits are shown as per-person / per-accident (for example, $100,000 / $300,000).

BI does not cover your own injuries. State minimums are often far below what a serious injury claim costs.
