# Endorsement (rider)

> What an insurance endorsement or rider is, how it modifies your base auto or home policy to add, remove, or change coverage, and when it takes effect.

An **endorsement** (sometimes called a rider) modifies your base policy. Examples include sewer backup, scheduled jewelry, home business liability, identity theft, or equipment breakdown.

Endorsements often cost a few dollars to a few tens of dollars per month and can fill meaningful gaps standard forms exclude.
