# Exclusion

> What an insurance exclusion is, common auto and home policy exclusions like flood or wear-and-tear, and why exclusions are the top reason claims get denied.

An **exclusion** is a peril or situation your policy does not cover. Exclusions are a common reason claims are denied.

Typical exclusions include flood (often requires a separate NFIP or private flood policy), earthquake, wear and tear, intentional damage, and nuclear events. Read exclusions before you need them.
