# Liability

> What liability coverage means — paying when you’re legally responsible for injury or damage.

**Liability** coverage helps pay when you are legally responsible for injuring someone or damaging their property — and can include related legal defense costs under many policies.

## Where you see it

* **Auto** — injury or property damage you cause while driving
* **Home / renters** — guests hurt on your property, or certain personal liability away from home
* **Umbrella** — extra liability limits above underlying home and auto (see [Umbrella insurance](/learn/umbrella-insurance))

Liability limits are chosen amounts. Low limits can leave personal assets exposed after a serious claim.
