# Personal property coverage

> What personal property coverage on a homeowners or renters policy protects, how limits are set, and how actual cash value differs from replacement cost.

**Personal property coverage** protects furniture, electronics, clothes, and other belongings. On homeowners policies it is often a percentage of dwelling coverage; on renters it is the main property coverage.

Check whether your policy pays actual cash value or replacement cost for contents — the difference matters at claim time.
