# Underinsured motorist (UIM)

> What underinsured motorist coverage (UIM) is on an auto policy, and how it pays your injury and damage costs when the at-fault driver has too little liability.

**Underinsured motorist (UIM)** covers you when the at-fault driver has insurance but not enough for your damages.

If they carry $25,000 liability and you have $80,000 in injuries, UIM may pay the gap. Separate from uninsured motorist; strongly recommended in most states.
